an eminent French painter, was born at Paris in 1567. He produced a fine picture of St. Sebastian, at Paris, when very young; afterwards visited Rome and studied the works of Michael Angelo; spent fifteen years in Italy, then returned to Paris in the reign of Henry IV, who appointed him his painter, and employed him in the chapel at Fontainebleau, the ceiling of which represents subjects from the Old and New Testaments, among them Noah and his Family Entering the Ark, and The Annunciation.
