Pommeraye, Jean-Francois
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a French Benedictine monk, was born in 1617 at Rouen. He entered in 1637 the Congregation of Saint-Maur, made his profession at Tumieges, and renounced voluntarily all charges of his order to devote himself to study. He died at Rouen Oct. 28, 1687. He left several works, more remarkable for erudition than sound criticism. We mention, Hist. de I'Abbaye de Saint-Ouen de Rouen, de Saint-Amand, et de Sainte- Catherine de la meme Ville (Rouen, 1662, fol.): — Hist. des Acheveques de Rouen(ibid. 1667, fol.), the best of his works: — Hist. de la Cathedrale de Rouen (ibid. 1686, 4to). Pommeraye published after the demise of Dom Jean Anger Godin, its true author, a Recueil des Conciles et des Synodes de Rouen (1667, 4to); but this collection was put into the shade by the excellent work Conciles de Normandie, published by Dom Bessin (1717, fol.). — Hoefer, Nouv. Biog. Gé neralé, s.v.
