Permian Version of the Scriptures
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
The Permian is a sister dialect of the Syrjenian and Wotjak, and the three peoples who live in the north-east of European, Russia, in the Perm, Wjatka, and Archangel governments, belong to a common race. Mr. Schiefner estimates the number of the Permians at 50,000, the Syrjenians 70,000, and the Wotjaks 200,000. From the annual report of the British and Foreign Bible Society for 1880, we learn that the gospel of Matthew, prepared for prince Louis Lucien Bonaparte by P. A. Popou, has been revised and translated into the Russ character by the academician Wiedemann, and published by the above society. From the report for 1882 we learn that the Holy Synod have sanctioned the publication of the gospel of Matthew, long delayed by the celsorial authorities, and that the portion will now be circulated throughout the government of Perm, among the population of about 50,000 souls.
