Peabody, David
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a Congregational minister, was born April 16, 1805, in Topsfield, Mass. He graduated at Dartmouth College in 1828; entered the ministry April, 1831. and was ordained pastor of the First Church, Lynn, Mass., November, 1832. from which charge he was, however, soon dismissed, on account of ill-health. He became pastor of the Calvinist Church, Worcester, July 15, of the following year. In 1838 he accepted the professorship of rhetoric at Dartmouth College, but died the next year, Oct. 17, 1839. Mr. Peabody published A Memoir of Horace Bassett Morse (1830): — A Discourse on the Conduct of Men considered in Contrast with the Law of God (1836): — A Sermon on the Sin of Covetousness considered in respect to Intemperance, Indian Oppression, etc. (1838): — The Patriarch of Hebron, or the History of Abraham (1841); and wrote a number of valuable articles for the Amer. Biblical Repository. See Sprague, Annals of the Amer. Pulpit, 2:744; Dr. Lord's Sermon on his death.
