Patton, William Weston, D.D., LL.D.
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a Congregational minister, was born in New York city, October 19, 1821; graduated from the University of New York in 1839, and from Union Theological Seminary in 1842; was a pastor until 1867; until 1872 editor of the Advance; western secretary of the American Missionary Association, 1873-74; lecturer at Chicago and Oberlin Theological seminaries, 1874-77; president of Howard University, Washington, D.C., 1877-89; and died December 31. 1889. Dr. Patton was a corporate member of the A.B.C. D.F.M. from 1869; one of the founders of the American Missionary Association; vice-president of the Sanitary Commission of the North-west; member of the Society of the Cincinnati; honorary member of the Society of Science, Literature, and Art (London, 1885).
