an eminent English composer of sacred music, was born at Stanwell, Middlesex, in 1715. He was educated as a chorister at King's Chapel, London. In 1734 he was appointed organist at York Cathedral, in 1756 organist and composer to king George II, and in the following year master of the choristers in the royal chapel, which position he held until 1780. He died in 1783. He composed several anthems and services for the royal chapel, and published Twenty Anthems in. Score, which is, still in constant use in the cathedrals of Great Britain.
