a Scottish Presbyterian divine of some distinction, was born at Millseat, Aberdeenshire, July 8, 1791. But little is known of his personal history. He was for many years pastor of the Independent Chapel at Brompton, and in 1816 removed to London as pastor of Tower Chapel. In 1824 he was appointed editor of the Evangelical Magazine, and held this position for thirty-two years. He died July 13, 1859. He wrote an Exposition of the Psalms (1819, 8vo), of which Horne speaks favorably, though it is far from being an independent and thorough work. His other works, which are mainly in the department of Practical Religion, are too numerous to be mentioned here. But noteworthy among his different publications are an Exposition of Part of the Epistle to the Colossians (1829, 8vo): — Lectures on the Reciprocal Obligations of Life (1822, 12mo), of a practical and useful character: — Protestant Reformation in all Countries (1843, and often): — Protestantism in Great Britain: — The Fathers and Founders of the Lond. Miss. Soc. (1844, 8vo, and often): — Christianity in its Power (1847, fcp. 8vo), a work which received the unqualified commendation of the English press and the Church.
