an early and very useful minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, April 27, 1758, and educated a papist; was converted through Methodist influence about 1776; entered the itinerancy in Virginia in 1781, but subsequent to 1787 his labors were mostly at the North, in the bounds of what has since become the New York Conference. He died at Hillsdale, N.Y., June 23, 1814. Mr. Moriarty was one of the oldest and most widely known ministers in the connection at the time of his death, a man who had labored long and ardently in the work of saving men. Although not eloquent, he was among the most useful men and successful preachers of his time, and an excellent presiding elder. Many souls were converted through his labors, and he died honored and beloved in all the churches. See Minutes of Annual Conferences, 1:240; Stevens, Memorials of Methodism, volume 2, chapter 10.
