an eminent historical painter, was born in London, July 9, 1744, and was instructed under Deshays, Boucher, and Vien. He carried off the grand prize of painting in 1766, and visited Rome with the royal pension. In 1780 he was chosen an academician, and afterwards appointed professor. In 1800 he returned to Paris, and became professor of the Academy of Painting. He has a fine picture in the sacristy of the Church of St. Denis. He died October 4, 1816. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog.
