The Livese is a dialect spoken by a remnant of the Finnish people in the peninsula of north-west Courlalnd, known by the name of Livs, inhabiting Livonia, a name given to the largest of the Baltic provinces of Russia. The Livs number about five thousand souls. The gospel of Matthew was transcribed for them into the Lettish character by the academician Widemann, at the expense of the British and Foreign Bible Society, and carried through the press in 1879.
