La Saussaye, Daniel Chantepie de
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a Walloon preacher and Dutch publicist, was born at La Have, December 10, 1818. He studied at Leyden, was preacher at the Walloon Church in Leeuwarde (1842-48), and at Leyden (1848-62). Here he edited a periodical entitled Ernst en Vrede (1853-58), in which he defended the ethical principle and supernatural in Christianity against the so-called "modern theology," inaugurated by J.H. Scholten. In 1862 he accepted a call to Rotterdam, where he edited another journal. In 1872 he was called to the chair of dogmatics and Biblical theology, which was formerly occupied by P. Hofstede de Groot, and died shortly afterwards, February 13, 1874, doctor of theology, a distinction conferred on him by the Bonn University in 1858.
