(Ι᾿ωσῆς, perhaps for Joseph, which is sometimes thus written in the Talmud, יוֹסֵי for יוֹסֵ; see Lightfoot on Acts 1:23; and, indeed, Ι᾿ωσήφ actually appears in some codices for Ι᾿ωσῆς in Matthew, Mark 15, and Acts; but better MSS. have Ι᾿ωάννης in Matthew 13; others have Ι᾿ησοῦς in Luke), the name of two or three persons in the New Testament.
1. Erroneously in the A.V. (Luke 3:29) JOSE (See JOSE) (q.v.).
2. The son of Mary and Cleopas, and brother of James the Less, of Simon, and of Jude, and, consequently, one of those who are called "the brethren" of our Lord (Matthew 13:55; Matthew 27:56; Mark 6:3; Mark 15:40; Mark 15:47). (See JAMES); (See JUDE). He was the only one of these brethren who was not an apostle – a circumstance which has given occasion to some unsatisfactory conjecture. It is, perhaps, more remarkable that three of them were apostles than that the fourth was not. A.D. 28. — Kitto. (See JESUS CHRIST).
3. (Acts 4:36.) (See BARNABAS).
