Hortig, Karl Anton
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
A distinguished German Roman Catholic (also known by the name given him by his order, JOHANN NEPOMIUCK), was born at Pleistein, Bavaria, in 1774, and was educated at the University of Ingolstadt. He entered the order of the Benedictines in 1794, and in 1799 became chaplain of a nunnery at Nü rnburg. In 1802 he was appointed professor of logic and metaphysics at the school of the Andech Cloister, and promoted, after filling various minor positions, to a professorship of theology at Landshut in 1821. In 1826 he removed with the university to Munich, where he received many honors, and died Feb. 27, 1847. His theological works are, Predigtenf. alle Festtage (Landsh. 1821; 3rd edit. 1832) — Predigten ü. d. sontaigigen Evangel. (ibid. 1827; 2nd ed. 1832) — Handb. d. christl. Kirchengesch.
