archbishop of York under king Edward VI, was one of the prelates of the Reformers who were silenced under queen Mary shortly after her accession to the throne of England, under the pretense that their marriage relations were non-ecclesiastical. Later (Oct. 4,1553) he was imprisoned in the Tower, and kept there until January 18 of the following year, when he was pardoned. The dates of the birth and death of Holgate are not known.
