(ἡμεροβαπτισταί ). Eusebias (Hist. Eccles. 4:22) cites from Hegesippus a list of heresies prevalent among the Jews, mad names, as one of the heretical sects, the Hemerobaptistae. Epiphanius (Haeres. 17) also names this sect, and derives their name from the fact that they hold daily ablutions to be essential to salvation (see also Apost. Const. lib. 6 cap. 6). Mosheim (Commentaries, Introd. chap. 2, § 9, endeavors to show that the so-called "Christians of St. John" are descended from these ancient Hemerobaptists.
