Hacke, Nicholas P., D.D.
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a German Reformed minister, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, September 20, 1800. At the age of six years he was sent to a relative in Bremen, Germany, to acquire a thorough knowledge of the German language. He returned to America in 1816, and studied theology privately until 1819, when he accepted an invitation to preach to some congregations in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, returning to his studies the same year. He was licensed and ordained in 1819, and became pastor of the Greensburg charge, which he served fifty-eight years, and died there, August 25, 1878. During the greater part of his ministry he preached exclusively in the German language. He was a student all his life, and used the English language with ease and grace. He was fully consecrated to his work, remarkable for his social powers, caring not for worldly honors, a model Christian gentleman, and faithful minister of the gospel.
