Godescard, Jean Francois
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a French ecclesiastical writer, was born at Rocquemont, near Rouen, March 30, 1728. He was successively secretary of the archbishop of Paris, prior of Notre Dame de Bon Repos, near Versailles, canon of St. Louis du Louvre, and prior of St. Honorius, at Paris, where he died, August 21, 1800. He wrote, Vies des Peres, des Martyrs, et des Autres Principaux Saints (from the English of Alban Butler, Villefranche and Paris, 1763, 1783, 1784), containing a large number of anecdotes which, true or doubtful, afford philosophers, historians, and hagiographers interesting information: — De la Mort des Perseculeurs (with historical notes translated from the Latin of Lectance, Paris, 1797): — Fondements de la Religion Chretienne (translated from the English of Challonner): — Table Alphabetique (of the Memoires de.
