Gardiner, Frederic
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a Protestant Episcopal minister, was born at Gardiner, Me., Sept. 11, 1822. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1842; became rector of Trinity Church, Saco, Maine, in 1845; of St. Luke's, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1847; of Grace Church, Bath, Maine, from 1848 to 1853; of Trinity Church, Lewiston, in 1855-56; in 1865 professor of the literature and interpretation of Scripture in the Protestant Episcopal Seminary, Gambier, Ohio; in 1867 assistant rector at Middletown, Connecticut; in 1869 professor in Berkeley Divinity School at the same place, and continued to be such until his death, July 17, 1889. He wrote, The Island of Life, an Allegory (1851): — Commentary on the Epistle of St. Jude (1856): — Harmony of the Gospels in Greek (1871): — Harmony of the Gospels in English (eod.): — Diatessaron: The Life of Our Lord in the Words of the Gospels (eod.): — Principles of Textual Criticism (1876): — The Old and New Testaments in their Mutual Relations (1885).
