a French divine and Orientalist, was born in Paris about 1670. He was bred a Roman Catholic, entered into holy orders, and became a canon in the abbey of St. Genevieve, but became a Protestant and settled in England. He was patronized by archbishop Sharp and other enaminet persons, and received the degree of M.A. at Cambridge and Oxford. Heobtained the Arabic professorship at Oxford in 1715, and died in 1740. He published an edition of Ben Gorion's "History of the Jews," in Hebrew, with a Latin translation and notes (Oxf. 1706, 4to): — Vindiciae Kircheriance (Oxf. 1718, fol.): — L'eglise Romaine convaincue d'idolatrie (La Haye, 1706, 8vo): — Vie de Mahomet, traduite et compilee de l'Alcoran (Amst. 1732, 2 volumes). — Hoefer, Nouv.
