a society founded in the 17th century, by Maria Ward, and originally intended for the education of youth. The first convent was established at St. Omer; there were soon others opened at Rome, in other parts of Italy, and in Munich. Doubts concerning the orthodoxy of the opinions held by the founder led to their suppression by Urban VIII in 1630. Yet they were not destroyed, and were formally reestablished by Clement XI in 1703. Aside from education, they also devoted themselves to the care of the sick. The congregation recognises three degrees: noble ladies, civilian maidens, and serving sisters; yet they. make no difference in their dress or mode of life.
