(or Elgistil), suffragan bishop of Llandaff, in the first half of the 6th century. Ely, Alfred, D.D., a Congregational minister, was born at West Springfield, Massachusetts, November 8, 1778. Leaving a clerkship at the age of twenty-one, he prepared for college at the Hartford (Connecticut) grammar-school, and graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1804. After a tutorship at the college for one year, he was ordained over the Church in Monson, Massachusetts, in 1806, where he was an active minister for thirty-six years, and died July 6, 1866. Dr. Ely was an able preacher and theologian, and his ministry was greatly blessed to the spiritual and moral elevation of his people. Twenty-one of his sermons and addresses were published. See Cong.
