a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, August 3, 1780. In 1806 he entered the itinerant ministry in the South Carolina Conference, and in 1807 he organized the first Methodist Church in Savannah, Ga. In 1812 he was made presiding elder of Mississippi District, and was elected to the General Conference, in which body he served also at the session of 1844, at which the Church was divided on the slavery question. In 1846 he was made superannuate, and died July 8,1854. He was a very successful preacher, and one of the founders of Methodism in the Southern States.
