a Presbyterian missionary, vas born in Rutland, N.Y., June 23, 1824. He graduated from Hamilton College in 1846, and from Auburn Theological Seminary in 1849; was ordained at Auburn the same year, and served as missionary in Foochow, Tientsil, and Shanghai, until 1869, and in 1872 and 1873. Thereafter he resided. at Clinton, N.Y., until his death, June 15, 1880. He is the author of Social Life of the Chinese (1865, 2 volumes): — Vocabulary and Hand-book of Chinese Language (1873).
