a French historian, was born September 23, 1803, at Fontenay, in Yendee, and was educated at Paris, at the seminary of St. Sulpice. When nineteen years of age he was appointed professor of philosophy, but, before entering upon his duties, he travelled in Italy and Germany. He died January 3, 1875. He edited several politico-religious journals, and is the author of Histoire de la Compagnie de Jesus (Paris, 184446, 6 volumes; 3d ed. 1851): Clement XIV et les Jesuites (ibid. 1847): L'Eglise Romaine en Face de Revolution (ibid. 1852, 2 volumes): Le Cardinal Consalvi (ibid. 1864, 2 volumes): Bonaparte, le Concordat de 1801 et le Cardinal Consalvi (ibid. 1869).
