a Methodist Episcopal divine, was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1821. He was brought up as a Wesleyan, converted in early life, and at eighteen became a local preacher. He was educated at King James's Grammar- school for one of the learned professions, but after spending several years in business in England, and from 1850 several more in Australia, he came to America in 1856, settled at Adrian, Mich., and the next year joined the Detroit Conference, being sent to Palmyra; the following year was stationed at Adrian, afterwards at Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, and Adrian; and in 1869 was appointed professor of philosophy in Michigan University, a position which he retained until his death, April 8, 1883. He was a fine scholar and a brilliant writer. He was the author of, Christianity and Greek Philosophy: Theistic Conception of the World: Student's Hand-book of Philosophy.
