Clajus (or Clay), Johann (the elder)

a Lutheran theologian of Germany, was born at Herzberg, in Saxony, in 1533. He studied at Grimma and Leipsic, was at first rector at Goldberg, then at Nordhausen, and finally pastor at Bendeleben, where he died April 11, 1592. He. published Elementa Linguae Ebraicae (Wittenlberg, 1573, a.o.): Libri Ties Prosodiae Latinorum, Graecorum, et Hebraeorum (ibid. 1614): Ecclesiastes Salomonis Carmine Redditus et Enarratus (ibid. 1583). He also translated into Hebrew the gospels and epistles for the Christian year, the Augsburg Confession, and forty-one hymns. See Jocher, Allgemeines Gelehrten-Lexikon, s.v.; Furst, Bibl.
