(in the plur. עָרֵי מַגְרָשַׁים, arey' migrashim', cities of pastures, 1 Chronicles 42:2), i.e. a town surrounded by open pasture-grounds or commons. The forty-eight cities which were given to the Levites were thus denominated; the extent of the suburbs appertaining to each city is accurately defined in Numbers 35:1-8; Joshua 21:41-42. They were evidently the surrounding districts to which the city gave the means of protection and safety. (See SUBURB).
