Christovao (of Lisbon), Frey
a Portuguese missionary, the first explorer of the river Tocantins, in Braizil, was born of a noble family near the close of the 16th century. In 1623 he was appointed guardian of the Capuchin convent at Maaramhao. He opposed, with all his influence, the reduction of the Indians to slavery, and then undertook to teach them.
