a French theologian and priest, was born in the parish of Puymaurin, diocese of Comminges, about 1630, and was educated at Toulouse. He became superior in the seminary of Pamiers, then adjunct: of the ecclesiastical government of that diocese, and opposed the law which gave the kings of France the right to use the revenues of the vacant churches in certain cases. The parliament of Toulouse condemned the writings of Charlas, but he escaped to Rome, where he died, April 7, 1698. His principal works are, Tractatus de Libertatibus Ecclesice Galliccarsc (Liege, 1684; Rome, 1720, 3 vols.):-Cacusa Regalice Penitus Explicata (Liege, 1685, 4to). See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog.
