Chacon (Lat. Ciaconius), Alfonso

a learned Spaniard, was born in 1540 at Baeza, in Andalusia. He entered the order of preaching friars, and went to Rome, where Gregory XIII appointed him apostolical penitentiary. He was well versed in ecclesiastical history and antiquities. He died at Rome in 1599. His principal works are, De Liberatione Trajani a Paenis Infeisni (Rome, 1576): Historia Utriusque Belli Dacici a Trajalno (ibid. eod.): De S. Hieronymi Cardinalitia Dignitate (ibid. 1591): Vitce et res Gestce Pontificum Romanorum Cardinalium (ibid. 1601), etc. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog.
