an English clergyman and poet, was born at Sheffield, Nov. 4, 1719. He was educated at the grammar-schools of Sheffield and Kirkby Lonsdale, and entered Clare Hall, Cambridge, in 1738. After leaving Cambridge he went to London, where he became assistant in an academy. About this time he took orders, and in 1743 was elected master of Tunbridge school. He was killed by a fall from his horse, April 15,1761. His principal works are, The Perjured Lover (1736): Abelard to Eloise (1746). An edition of his Poems appeared in 1771. See Chalmers, Biog.
