an English clergyman, was born in Devonshire in 1588, and educated at St. Edmund's Hall, Oxford. About 1626 he became acquainted with archbishop Usher, then at Oxford, who admired his talents, and took him to Ireland' where he made him one of his chaplains. Soon after this Carpenter was advanced to a deanery. He died at Dublin, according to Wood, in 1628; according to Fuller, in 1635. His publications include Philosophia Libera, etc. (1621), memorable as one of the first attacks upon the Aristotelian philosophy: Geographie Delineated (1625):and several Sermons.
