a German jurisconsult and canon, was born at Rostock, March 2,1677. He was descended from an aristocratic family, which had made itself famous in England under Henry VIII. He studied theology in his native town, but afterwards studied law at the universities of Wittenberg and Jena. After his return to Rostock, in 1706, he was appointed archivist and secretary of the academy, and procurator of the Protestant consistory. In 1712 he occupied the chair of elocution and of belles-lettres, and in 1718 he became professor of the Pandects. He died at his native city, July 25, 1743, leaving many historical treatises, for which see Hoefer, Nouv. Biog. Gé neralé, s.v.
