In 1766 the Connoisseur alludes to the appearance in the streets of the doctor's scarf, pudding-sleeve gown, starched bands, and feather topgrizzle. George Herbert, when ordained priest. laid aside his sword, which he had worn as a deacon, and adopted a canonical coat.
