an Italian missionary, was born at San Antonio, near Naples, in 1762. He early became a member of the Dominican order, was consecrated priest, and, being charged with the duties of teaching, he acquitted himself to the satisfaction of his superiors. He joined the College of the Propagandists at Rome, and, on account of his knowledge of the Arabic language, was sent, in 1802, into the East as prefect of the missions of Mesopotaniia and Kurdistan. Returning to Naples after thirteen years of successful labor, Campanile became preacher, and soon after assistant professor of Arabic, at the University of Naples, where he died, March 2,1835.
