Buist, George, D.D.
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a Presbyterian minister, was born in Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1770. He was distinguished for his scholarship while connected with the Edinburgh College, especially in the department of Grecian literature. On the recommendation of Dr. Robertson and Dr. Blair he was called to take charge of the Presbyterian Church in Charleston, S. C. He entered upon the duties of his office in June, 1793, and subsequently received an appointment as principal of the Charleston College. He died in the midst of his usefulness, Aug. 31, 1808. As a preacher he enjoyed a fine reputation. Among the productions of his pen were various articles prepared by him for the British Encyclopaedia, an abridgment of Hume's History of England for schools, a version of the Psalms, etc. Two volumes of his sermons were published in 1809.
