an Italian missionary of the Jesuit; order, was born at Palermo, Jan. 26, 1606. Being destined by the superiors of his order for the Eastern missions, he departed for Japan, but the ports being closed. to missionaries, he passed on to China, where he remained, laboring for the conversion of the Chinese, forty-five years, and was able to speak the Chinese language with great fluency. He died at Pekin, Oct. 7,1682. He. composed a large number of works in the Chinese language, and also translated and published in Pekin several religious manuals. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog.
