Buckeridge, John (2)
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a Church of England divine and prelate, was born near Marlborough, date unknown. He was educated at Cambridge, and was made D.D. there in 1596. He was afterward rector of North Fambridge, and prebendary of Hereford; in 1604 he became archdeacon of Northampton, and vicar of St. Giles's, Cripplegate. Becoming chaplain to the king, he grew rapidly in favor; became president of St. John's College, 1605; canon of Windsor, 1606; bishop of Rochester, 1611, whence he was translated to Ely in 1626, and died May 23,1631. He was a man of great learning and piety. His writings include De potestate Papae in rebus temporalibus sive in regibus deponendis usurpata, etc. (Lond. 1614, 4to); a Discourse on kneeling at the holy Communion; and Sermons (1618). — Hook, Eccl.
