Buckbridge (Buckeridge Or Buckridge), John

an English prelate of the first part of the seventeenth century, was born at Draycott, near Marlborough, Wiltshire. He was educated under Mullcaster, in Merchant Taylors' School, and at St. John's College, Oxford, where, from a fellow, he became doctor of divinity and president (1605)., He afterwards succeeded Lancelot Andrews in the vicarage of St. Giles, Cripplegate. On June 6, 1611, Buckbridge was consecrated bishop of Rochester, and afterwards set forth a learned book in opposition to John Fisher, De Potestate Papae in Temporalibus (Lond. 1614). He was transferred to the bishopric of Ely in 1626, died May 23,1631, and was buried in the parish church of Bromley, Kent. Bishop Buckbridge also published Sermons (1618), etc. See Fuller, Worthies of England (ed. Nuttall), 3:327.
