Brewer, Darius Richmond
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
an Episcopal minister, was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, June 23, 1819. He graduated at Harvard University in 1838, studied theology at Andover and New Haven, took orders in the Episcopal Church in 1842, and was ordained priest in 1844. In 1842 he commenced his public ministry at St. Peter's Church, Cambridgeport, Massachusetts, where he remained until 1844, when he became rector of St. Paul's Church, Concord, N.H. In December 1846, he became minister of Trinity Church, Newport, R.I. In 1855 he became rector of Immanuel Church, in the same city; this Church having been organized by himself. In 1858 he removed to Yonkers, N.Y., where, having organized St. John's Church, he was its rector for more than eight. years. The Church of the Reformation in Brooklyn was a third Church organized by Mr. Brewer, of which he was the rector over six years. In October 1873, he went to Christ Church, Westerly, R.I., where he remained until his death, March 18, 1881. Mr. Brewer "was a preacher of rare ability, his sermons being marked by great clearness of style, aptness of illustration, and fervor of spirit. He was in full sympathy with all of Christ's disciples of every denomination, and: his occasional sermons in the Congregational and other pulpits of his native town are specially remembered, See R.I.
