Bodwell, Joseph Conner, D.D.
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a Congregational minister, son of Rev. Abraham Bodwell, was born at Sanbornton, N. H., June 11, 1812. . Having received his preliminary education at Woodman Academy in his native town, he entered Dartmouth College, from which he graduated in 1833. For two years he was a teacher in the Haverhill Academy, and taught also in Sanbornton for one year. He studied theology in Highbury College, London, England, graduating in 1838. His ordination occurred in the following year in the Church at Weymouth, Dorsetshire, over which he was pastor until 1845. In 1847 he was installed pastor at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, from which he was dismissed in 1850, and returned to America. From 1852 to 1862 he was pastor of the Church at Framingham, Mass.; from 1862 to 1866 at Woburn; from 1866 to 1873 was professor of preaching and the pastoral charge in Hartford Theological Seminary, Conn., after which he resided in Hartford without charge until the close of his life. From 1861 to 1868 he was one of the editors of the Boston Review. He died at Southwest Harbor, Mt. Desert, Me., July 17, 1876. Dr. Bodwell published a number of sermons and addresses. See Cong.
