Bettinelli Giuseppe Maria
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
(called also Xaviero), an Italian Jesuit and litterateur, was born at Mantua, July 18, 1718. He was educated by the Jesuits at Mantua and Bologna, and joined the society in 1736; From 1739 to 1744 he taught belles-lettres at Brescia, after which he went to Bologna to study divinity. In 1748 he became professor of rhetoric at Venice, and in 1751 the College of Nobles at Parma was intrusted to him. He remained in that office eight years, during which he visited the various cities of Italy in the interest of his order. After the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773 he retired to Mantua, where he spent the greater part of his remaining years. He died Sept. 13, 1808.
