Benvenuto Giovanni Battista

(called L'Ortolano), an Italian painter, was born at Ferrara about 1490, and studied a few years in his native city, after which he visited Bologna and became a pupil of Bartolomeo Bagnacavallo. One of his best pictures is the Virgin and Infant, with saints, in the Church of St. Niccolo, 1520; in St. Mariahe painted a Nativity; and in St. Lorenzo the Adoration of the Magi.
