a Congregational minister, was born at Ashfield, Mass., April 5, 1806. He was a graduate from Dartmouth College, and at once. in 1828, became a teacher in Mobile, retaining that position until 1830, when he entered Princeton Theological Seminary. After studying at this institution for two years, he completed his course in the Yale Theological Seminary in 1833. From 1833 to 1850 he was the ordained pastor of the Congregational Church at East Hampton, Mass. He was installed March 5, 1851, at Elmira, N.Y.; from which he was dismissed Nov. 7, 1854, and continued to reside in that city until the close of his life. Becoming interested in educational matters, he was chosen superintendent of the public schools in Elmira in 1859, and held that position until 1866. He died in Manhattanville, N. Y., in August, 1876.
