an eminent Presbyterian divine, was born in Virginia July 22, 1771, and educated at Liberty Hall, Lexington, of which institution he became principal in 1799. Having been licensed to preach two years before, he also became pastor of the Presbyterian congregation at the same place, which post he filled for over thirty years. He continued his connection with Liberty Hall. afterward Washington College, until 1829, and received the degree of D.D. in 1812. In 1832 he became Professor of Theology in the Union Theological Seminary, and there labored until his death, April 24, 1841. Dr. Baxter was the author of various sermons and essays.
