succeeded Maximus II. as forty-third bishop of the see, A.D. 456. A portion of a letter addressed to him by St. Simeon Stylites is preserved by Evagrius (H. E. ii, 10), in which Simeon expresses his thankfulness for the declaration of the faith made at the Council of Chalcedon, and exhorts Basil to play the man in behalf of the truth.
