(άῤῥαβών , earnest or pledge). The early church used a great variety of expressions to describe the elements of bread and wine in the Lord's Supper, and among the rest, the expressions ἀῤῥαβών and ἀῤῥαβὼν τῆς μελλούσης ζωῆς, earnest of the life to come, probably with reference to 2 Corinthians 1:22; 2 Corinthians 5:5; and Ephesians 1:14. (See EARNEST). The Arrhabonarii were sacramentarians in the 16th century who held that the bread and wine in the Eucharist are neither the real body and blood of Christ, nor the signs of them, but only the pledge and earnest thereof. (See PLEDGE).
