a Reformed theologian of Switzerland, was born Sept. 12, 1697, at Basle, where he prepared himself for the ministry. In 1739 he was called as pastor to Wallenburg, where he died, Oct. 10, 1770. He was one of the prominent preachers of the Gospel in his day, and the author of many hymns, which were published in 1739 under the title Erbaulicher Christenschatz, and which formed the basis for the Basle hymn-book published in 1743.
