Allen, Jacob
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a Congregational minister, was born at Columbia, Conn., Aug. 18,1781. When about twenty-three he went to North Coventry, where he was converted, and where he studied under Rev. E. T. Woodruff. After teaching, he entered Dartmouth College, graduating in 1811; studied theology with Dr. Burton of Thetford, Vt.; was ordained pastor at Tunbridge, Vt.; labored there and at Eastbury, Conn., at Voluntown, Sterling, and Preston; in 1851 he returned to Voluntown, preaching there until his death, March 13, 1856. Rev. Henry Robinson, in a sermon at his funeral, described him as "a sound and able theologian, an earnest and instructive preacher; eminently gifted in prayer; a faithful and devoted pastor, a wise and safe counsellor," etc. Mr. Allen was a frequent contributor to periodicals.
