יָצַר fut. וַיִּיצֶר, וַיִּצֶר, also יִצֹּר Isaiah 44:12 (so also Isaiah 42:6, 49:8 אֶצָּרְךָ which, in my Commentary, I have with others incorrectly derived from נָצַר); see No. 2.
(1) to form, to fashion, as a potter, clay (see יוֹצֵר a potter), Genesis 2:7, 8:19 an artist, statues, Isaiah 44:9, 10 Isaiah 44:10, 12 Isaiah 44:12 arms, Isaiah 54:17. Often used of God as the Creator, Psalms 94:9, יוֹצֵר עַיִן “he who formed the eye,” Psalms 33:15, 74:17 99:5 Isaiah 45:7, 18 Isaiah 45:18, in which sense it is often joined with בָּרָא. Part. יוֹצֵר as a subst. is
(a) a potter, Psalms 94:9, 20 Psalms 94:20 whence כְּלִי יוֹצֵר a vessel of earthenware, Psalms 2:9; 2 Samuel 17:28.
(b) an artist, a maker of statues, Isaiah 44:9.
(c) creator, Isaiah 43:1, 44:2, 24 Isaiah 44:24. As to the word יוֹצֵר Zechariah 11:13, see p. 343, B. [The use made of the passage in the New Test. proves that the word here simply means the potter.]
(2) Followed by לְ to form for any thing, to destine for any thing; Isaiah 44:21, יְצַרְתִּיךָ לְעֶבֶד לִי “I have formed thee, that thou mayest be my servant;” Isaiah 42:6, אֶצָּרְךָ וְאֶתֶּנְךָ לִבְרִית עֶם “I have formed thee, and made thee the author of a covenant of the people;” Isaiah 49:5, Isaiah 49:8, 45:18 (fin.). II.
יָצַר i.q. צוּר, but intrans. to be straitened, to be narrow, (comp. Gramm. § 76, Lehrg. § 112). Only found in fut. יֵצַר, pl. יֵצְרוּ Proverbs 4:12; Isaiah 49:19; Job 18:7. Elsewhere impers. וַיֵּצֶר לוֹ it was narrow to him (in pret. צַר לוֹ), i.e.
(a) to be in distress, Judges 2:15, 10:9 Job 20:22.
(b) to be in perplexity, Genesis 32:8 (and so in f. וַתֵּצֶר לוֹ 1 Samuel 30:6).
(c) to be grieved (er nahm es fich nahe), 2 Samuel 13:12.
